How To Set Goals That Matter

As we step into 2025, many of us are setting new goals and resolutions. Social media is buzzing with trends of what our goals could be but what can we do to make sure these goals matter and, more importantly, become permanent? Whether you’re aiming for personal growth or career advancement, setting goals that actually stick is a game-changer. Let’s explore how to create goals that are not only meaningful but also executable.

Did you know that only 9% of people successfully keep their New Year's resolutions? Research shows that 23% quit within the first week, and only 36% make it past the first month. These numbers highlight the importance of setting realistic and achievable goals to increase your chances of success. Successfully setting goals not only helps you work towards something that is valuable but it also encourages you towards meeting goals on other levels - relationships, work, family, and life.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of setting big, ambitious goals. However, these lofty aspirations often lead to disappointment when we can’t keep up with them. Studies have shown that smaller, actionable goals are far more effective. The SMART goals framework, for example, emphasizes setting goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, which significantly increases the chances of success.

A Systemic Approach to Goal-Setting

When it comes to goal-setting, I take a systemic perspective. This means understanding the relational cues and needs of a person, which is crucial, especially when considering how to set accountability goals for ourselves. When we allow ourselves to consider the impact on others, as well as ourselves, it provides a broader perspective on the importance of following through with these goals. They are no longer simply something I talked about on December 31, but they are now something you want to work towards because it’s important to someone you care for. By considering the bigger picture and how various aspects of life interconnect, you can set more realistic and impactful goals.

The Power of Accountability

No one is an island, and having a cheerleader or an accountability partner can make all the difference. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or a professional like a therapist or coach, having someone to support and encourage you can help keep you on track. I’ve seen countless clients succeed because they had someone to check in with and celebrate their progress.

Practical Tips for Setting Goals That Matter So, how do you set goals that matter? Here are some practical tips:

  • What is my goal and how does it matter to those around me?: Give yourself the bigger picture understanding of why this goal is important to follow through on.

  • Break it Down: Divide your goals into smaller, manageable tasks.

  • Regular Reviews: Set aside time to review your progress regularly.

  • Be Flexible: It’s okay to adjust your goals as needed.

  • Celebrate Successes: Don’t hesitate to get “over” excited about your achievements, no matter how small. Celebrating successes can boost your motivation and help you stay positive.

  • Practice Gratitude: Make it a habit to practice gratitude. Focusing on the positives and what you’ve accomplished can keep you on track and motivated.

  • Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to others for help and accountability. This could be a friend, a family member, or a coach or counselor.

Setting goals that matter is about finding the balance between ambition and practicality. By taking a systemic approach, enlisting the help of accountability partners, and applying practical strategies, you can set and achieve goals that truly make a difference. Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. If you need support along the way, feel free to reach out. Together, we can turn those goals into reality.
